Music Typography Poster
Song: What the Water Gave Me
Artist: Florence + The Machine
Album: Ceremonials (2011)
Concept: To have the lyrics mimic water waves as they form a visual piece with type.
I chose this song because I really like the sound and tempo of it. It came up on my iPod that I decided to use it for my typographic project. I thought this song would be a good song show in a visual way since the lyrics tell a "story". I hope to make the poster look a mix between fantasy underwater look with images created with type that relate to the song.
1. What are the distinctive parts of the recording; what is the structure?
One of the distinctive parts of the song is the beginning beat which makes the song slow down like "sinking into the water" feeling. The second distinctive part is the chorus at the end of the song which jumps up in rhythm but dies down as the song finishes.
The structure of the song is based on:
Verse/ Chorus/ Verse/ Chorus/ Bridge/ Verse/ Chorus/ Chorus
2. Is there a repetitive chorus or beat?
Chorus:
So lay me downLet the only sound
Be the over flow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
3. What is the tempo, rhythm?
The tempo is slow and mellow, rhythm is 1/2 time, since the beat feels like slow sinking feeling.
4. What feelings are evoked by the music?
Some of the feelings evoke by the song are some what solemn in the beginning, but then changes to a kind of slow mellow feeling in the middle, and an outbreak of emotion at end of the song, during the repeating chorus at the end. It evokes the feeling of sinking at a point of time and struggling to "get to the surface" or being "taken under".
