Music Poster Song- Jeremy Diaz

Song: M.A.A.D. City
Artist: Kendrick Lamar featuring MC Eiht
Album: Good Kid M.A.A.D. City
Music Video:

I choose this song because it is one of my favorites songs from the album and also because I felt that the lyrics convey great imagery and vividly paint a picture of the subject matter. My concept is to make a story using the lyrics of song and try to create a dynamic design that signifies the story of the song.

Music Poster Song and Concept - Stephanie Tatoiu

Song: The Phantom of the Opera
From: The stage musical of the same name
Music by: Andrew Lloyd Webber
Sung by: Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman

I chose the theme to The Phantom of the Opera for my Typography project because I like musicals and I recently saw this one in theater. I thought it'd be interesting to put the song in the form of a Typography poster. I also want to incorporate the spooky, dramatic feeling of the song somehow into the finished project.

1. What are distinctive parts of the recording?
The organ in the beginning is probably the most memorable part of the song. Christine's singing at the end is also unique from the rest of the song.

2. Is there a repetitive chorus or beat?
"The Phantom of the Opera is here,
Inside my/your mind"
The chorus: "He's there, the Phantom of the Opera!" [x2]
The beat is also repetitive.

3. What is the tempo, rhythm?
Moderate to fast / lively

4. What feelings are evoked by the music?
I would say that it has a mysterious, spooky, or dramatic feeling to it.

Song: What the Water Gave Me
Artist: Florence + The Machine
Album: Ceremonials (2011)

Concept: To have the lyrics mimic water waves as they form a visual piece with type.
I chose this song because I really like the sound and tempo of it. It came up on my iPod that I decided to use it for my typographic project. I thought this song would be a good song show in a visual way since the lyrics tell a "story". I hope to make the poster look a mix between fantasy underwater look with images created with type that relate to the song.

1. What are the distinctive parts of the recording; what is the structure?

One of the distinctive parts of the song is the beginning beat which makes the song slow down like "sinking into the water" feeling. The second distinctive part is the chorus at the end of the song which jumps up in rhythm but dies down as the song finishes.

The structure of the song is based on:
Verse/ Chorus/ Verse/ Chorus/ Bridge/ Verse/ Chorus/ Chorus
2. Is there a repetitive chorus or beat?

Chorus:
   So lay me down
   Let the only sound
   Be the over flow
   Pockets full of stones
       Lay me down
       Let the only sound
       Be the overflow
3. What is the tempo, rhythm?

The tempo is slow and mellow, rhythm is 1/2 time, since the beat feels like slow sinking feeling.

4. What feelings are evoked by the music?

Some of the feelings evoke by the song are some what solemn in the beginning, but then changes to a kind of slow mellow feeling in the middle, and an outbreak of emotion at end of the song, during the repeating chorus at the end. It evokes the feeling of sinking at a point of time and struggling to "get to the surface" or being "taken under".

Song: Something Something (feat. Zip Zip Through the Night)
Artist: Kaskade

(1) What are the distinctive parts of the recording; what is the structure?
The chorus is defintely a distinctive part of the recording.  The song starts out slow and then slowly picks up.. it repeats this throughout the whole song.

(2) Is there a repetitive chorus or beat?
I don't need you
I just want you
I want you
When you hear this
You'll know what
You know

(3) What is the tempo, rhythm?
Slow at times then picks up when the chorus is sung

(4) What feelings are evoked by the music?
I feel that sadness is almost evoked because the song is about wanting someone, and telling them that they'll do anything for them.  It's defintely a song about love and desire and has a very soulful vibe.

Beginning Idea:

Music Poster | Song + Concept | Nauseda

Song: Master Blaster (Jammin')
Artist: Stevie Wonder
Album: Hotter Than July (1980)

This is one of my favorite Stevie jams, no pun intended. It's the kind of song you can't help close your eyes and bob your head to immediately, and has a really fun bass part to play.
My concept for the actual poster involves some sort of repetition of a form. I want to utilize the part of the chorus, "We'll be jammin' and jammin' and jammin' and jam on."
I was thinking of overly repeating it and using ampersands instead.
I want the font to be smooth and to use cool color tones throughout to reflect the mood of the song, despite it being from an album all about heat. I want the overall form to be clean and easy on the eyes.

Lecture/Exhibition attendance: Social Media & Crowd-funding for Creatives - Stephanie Tatoiu

On January 31st, 2014, I attended the Social Media & Crowd-funding event at CDM. It was hosted by Jessica King and Julie Keck, and I feel like I learned a lot out of what they discussed. The workshop worked especially well for me because as an independent creative, I want to learn more about how to get connected with “the crowd” and discover how to sell what I offer as an artist and an animator. The two speakers had raised over 300,000 dollars for indie projects of their own with crowd funding, and while I currently don’t have an indie project as a goal, their speech on becoming connected with social media really impacted me.  They deliberated on how to correctly gain an audience with my work, and how to not alienate or push away someone from what I have to offer. I found this really vital because there are many times where I wish I knew how to share my work without scaring away potential fans or friends.  I especially related to them when they mentioned Twitter and Tumblr as main websites where one may gather an audience through social media. They mentioned how not every artist or film maker or designer needs a presence on every social platform. It all depends on where I think I can flourish the best. According to the discussion we had, I feel that my place is especially on YouTube and Tumblr (YouTube for my animation, because their website is clearly video based, and Tumblr for art, shorter animations, and GIFs, because it’s more visual than textual, in my personal opinion). Twitter can also be used to promote my work, as well as encourage and interact with other artists. Helping other people with their work is a good idea too, because often times, those people will be there give help in return. The workshop has inspired me to continue doing my best with my work and to create an audience that I can connect with and depend on.
