Chapter 7 discusses the evolution of technological typography.
When people think of history, not many of them think of typography and how it
has really changed the world. I learned that typography played a role in the
beginning of the Industrial Revolution. I found that pretty fascinating! Technological
advances in typography are very interesting to me because of the world I grew
up in today. It is very uncommon for my generation to study the history of
typography and appreciate all the technology we have today. I like being able
to relate what I know about today’s world back to typography. For example, when
machinery started to develop, typography continued to grow. I work for a toy
company, and it is the exact same story for us. Once a simple toy like a yo-yo
entered the minds of an intelligent engineer, the toy became a worldwide competitive
sport and has turned into an unbelievable art. Typography relates to a lot of
the advances we have in today’s world, and I appreciate seeing where it has
grown.
Everyday, typography enters our life one way or another
whether we notice it or not. Typography is a form of communication, and it is
amazing to see how throughout the years digital technology has allowed type to
be more legible for communication to get across. Almost every message today conveys
some type.
I think it is also important to note how much more is
involved with type asides from just machinery. Without the memory devices,
software, and user interfaces we have today, typography would not be as
advanced. All of these aspects make a big difference in the evolution of
technological typography. I think this world, and my generation especially,
takes not just technology, but the beauty of typography, for granted. Reading
this chapter has really allowed me to reflect and appreciate everything
typography has done for the world.
