Chapter 7 is about the
technological advances that have been made in the world of typography. Typography was even called the beginning of
the Industrial Revolution. I thought this
chapter was particularly interesting because knowing the history of how typography
started and how it has evolved is very important in understand typography as a
whole. With the advance use of
machinery, typography was able to be used and further advanced. As a design major, I think that it would be
interesting to see how one of these many machines worked. Knowing that designers in the past has to go
through advanced processes just to get some type on paper, makes me have a
greater appreciation for typography and its history. I am thankful for the technology that is
provided today. In all of my classes, we
use type in one way or another, and knowing the time and patience it took for
those in the past, half of my assignments would never get done. Our advances in technology with digital photo
type help make our work a lot more clear and legible. The chapter mentions that metal type setting
is looked on as an art form, and I agree.
Lots of patience and skill is necessary in order to achieve great type
through these machines. I think that it
would be interesting to see how one of these machines worked. This chapter also talks about software, the
user interface, and storage devices.
Without all of these components, graphic design wouldn’t be where it is
today. The computer is extremely
important in regards to graphic design, and many other fields of work. I think many of us take the computer and all
of these programs for granted because we don’t know of anything different; this
is what we grew up with. Having an
appreciation for all of the technology presented to us is very important, and I
will keep this chapter in mind when using type and all of these programs.
