Typography Dating Game

I overall really enjoyed this game because it helped with pairing type.  At first I would think that with pairing type you normally found a typeface that looked almost identical to the one you already had, but this game taught me to look for certain elements in type and match those together to create visually appealing pairings.  When starting the game, I looked for a type that I found was appealing to my taste.  I like very simple type that is easy to read and uniform.  That is why I chose the “k” which was in the typeface Univers.  I like Univers because it is very simple and clean.  I then chose the “seek the similar” option because I wanted to see what would look best with Univers when creating a document or piece.  At first I would think that the V in Futura would work best because it looks almost identical to univers, but as I looked closely, I noticed that they would almost blend into each other and that would make it harder to distinguish the type from one another.  The typeface Maple was a little too extravagant for my taste so I then chose Glypha.  The subtle tapering and the large oval counters in the “d” were very similar in each typeface.  The biggest difference was that Glypha is a serif typeface and Univers is sans serif.  In the letter “k” in Univers, the legs meet at a point while in Glypha they don’t and they have thick slab serifs.  Glypha has condensed proportions, while Univers has a homogenous structure.  When I finally sent them on a date, they were a match.

I thought that choosing a typeface match was the most fun because it allowed you to use your own judgment on typefaces and see if you were correct.  I then liked to see how the typefaces worked together in a document, and how they visually coordinated with each other.  This game helped me learn a lot about type and how to pair type efficiently.  I know now to look for subtle similarities instead of obvious ones.
