Mallory Brown - Chapter 1 Reflection

Chapter 1: The Evolution of Typography

This chapter entails pretty much every step of the evolution of typography. What I found to be extremely interesting was the beginning of typography, when it was still on stone blocks and the letter forms were carved with a chisel. I don’t particularly like these early forms of type for their form, but really more for their history and legacy. This is the beginning of written communication. Without written communication today, where would we be? We would not be able to communicate with other people across all walks of land. These small markings changed the course of the world forever. As this chapter continues and the evolution of type goes on, I find myself fascinated with the beauty that is put into these letter forms. Even though they would not be considered “perfect” today, they are fascinating to analyze and look closely at their brush work. I really enjoy hand-written text and this chapter has a lot of it. Its also interesting to look at the type that used to be used and the documents that used to be produced and experience how incredibly hard it is to read. The legibility back in the day was not the most important issue. The documents all seem to be in justified and I find myself lost in the form of the column instead of the actual words. It is again interesting to see the way these letters were formed before they had computers or grids to help. The letters are formed on a squared marked with a bunch of different sized circles. Its kinda cool that you can get most letter forms from this simple grid.
