Typography Dating Game
I was not very good at this game. I don’t think I ever got a pairing correct on
my first guess. To begin with I chose
the letter “S” in Archer. I liked Archer
because of its gentle, laid-back take on a traditional form. I also like its description, “I am a triple
threat in the home, kitchen, and garden.”
After choosing the “S” I went with the method of seeking the
similar. I thought this would be the
easiest. My first choice was the letter
“M” in ITC Franklin Gothic. I mainly
chose this one because I thought it looked the most similar to Archer. I was wrong.
My second choice was then the letter “P” in Avenir. I was right!
After sending them on a date and being able to read why they worked
together I thought that the pairing made a lot more sense. When I was playing the game I was trying too
hard to find fonts that looked similar rather than fonts that worked together. I really like how Archer and Avenir look
together and the example of a travel guide was a cool way to see how to use
both fonts together in real life. The
heavy weights in Avenir go well with the lightness of Archer and both keep the
design playful. I very much like the Avenir typeface.
I played the game a few times after too and I still wasn’t
very good but I did learn a lot about what can work together and why. I learned what to look for when pairing
fonts.
