Typography Anatomy - Stephanie Tatoiu

For my serif font, I went to Dafonts.com and downloaded the font Romance Fatal Serif. Like it sounds, Romance Fatal Serif reminds me of a font that would be used for some sort of romance / fantasy novel book cover, or even for TV shows with a fantasy theme.  I always enjoyed serif fonts like these that have large amounts of fillets/tails/ears decorating the letters. This font looks fancy and delicate but strong at the same time. It could be used for fancy documents from hundreds of years ago, or even for fairy tales. The little additions to the letters, like how the capital “Z” has a swirly, distorted arm, makes the font silly but fun. Each letter is very specifically stylized and distinguishable. What I enjoy the most about this particular typeface is how some letters go underneath the baseline. They don’t all follow the baseline alignment most fonts do. For example, the lower case “c” will go underneath the baseline. The lower case “k” has a tail that extends as low as the letters who have descenders.

Minimal is also a clean and simple font that I really enjoy. It is a sans serif that can be used in a variety of different places. It reminded at first of the font used for Calvin Klein but now that I really think about it, it also reminds me of the font for the TV show Once Upon a Time. I like the tiny little details about this font too; the lower case “e” has a bottom stroke that is shorter to its ear compared to Romance Fatal Serif.  Even though it’s a sans serif, it also has tiny ears on its lower case “a”, “g”, “m”, “n”, “p” and “q”. I also like how the diagonal stroke on the capital “Q” is the only capital letter that goes underneath the baseline. Its simplicity and clarity leads to a good design.
