Spencer - Chapter 1 Reflection

Chapter 1 Reflection - Spencer

Chapter one of our book is a historical timeline of sorts that represents the evolution of typography. It was very interesting to see how through time, our ways of written communication have became what they are today. The evolution of typography has far passed being solely a way to describe and inform people. Typography has become a tool to solve problems.

I was very interested in the examples that were shown, especially in the very early stages of the evolution process. It’s interesting to see how our roman alphabet took form after the different scripts that were primarily used before it, though it is clear how certain letterforms came to be such as in the case of a M, A, E or N. As time progressed, the letterforms in the book became more and more similar to those that we use today.

What I really took away from this chapter was that the evolution of typography has allowed designers and others a chance to express visual information in a plethora of ways. With all of the stylistic choices of typefaces and other visual choices that we have with techniques such as justification, alignment, and kerning, we have so much freedom and choice in how we want to express an idea.

I chose this photo because I think it signifies the evolution of typography in a humorous way that all people would recognize. It even uses more classic serif fonts for the early human figure, and as the evolution continues, more modern typefaces are used.
