The type anatomy I did was Big
Caslon. This is a group of serif typefaces that is characterized by short
ascenders and descenders, high contrast, texture, bracketed serifs, and
variation of stroke. The feeling of this
type of font is very British to me. The look can be seen on an old English
newspaper as if from the movie, “Sherlock Holmes.” It has an old, but subtle,
cobblestone feel to it. It isn’t over the top elegance, but has a sort of class
to it. It is a type of font anyone can relate to, rich or poor. A store brand I
would choose for this font would be like a Saks Fifth Ave or a Henry Bendel.
These are high-end stores, but don’t over-do the fancy name or brand by being
over the top. It is simple, yet classy.
The other type of font I chose was Calabria. This was the most basic font I could find that I thought would be perfect. This is a font that could go anywhere, like a high school world history textbook. It would be the labels identifying the continents in the book. No one would second-guess a letter because of its basic quality. If I could relate this font to a clothing style it would be something like The Gap. It’s basic, yet uniformly clear style comes across purposely and gives the viewer the exact intentions it directs.
