Chapter 2 – The Anatomy of Typography
Chapter 2 is about the basic
language of typography, as well as the letterforms and all the fundamental
components of typographic communications. This chapter included a lot of the
basics of typography, which I think is important to learn before trying to
design with type. I found it really
helpful to have a section of definitions of all the different parts of
letterforms. As well as the examples of where the definitions are actually on
the letterforms. This really helped me
understand what each part of the letterforms is. When the authors were talking
about proportions of letterforms, I found it helpful to have the different
comparisons between different fonts as well as the descriptions.
One thing that I found interesting
was the section on the historical classification of typefaces. It was
interesting to learn about the different kinds of type styles and the history
behind them. Before reading this chapter I never realized that there were so
many different type styles of different fonts. Traditionally when you think of
fonts, you think of the main styles like bold, light, condensed, or expanded.
But there are so many more than that like ultra bold, extra expanded, ultra
light, and even different types of serif styles.
At first I didn’t really understand
the type measurement system, but after doing the activity in class were we
measured the book, I understand it much better. While the book explained it
well, I think that it is something that you just have to physically do to understand.
I found it interesting to see all the
different styles in the Cheltenham and Univers type families. Even though they
are all in the same type family, because some styles are so drastic different
from each other they start to look like different fonts. I think that is the
appeal of using these because you can get a lot of variation using one family
in a design.
